Labeling the Trees On Campus

Before the year ended and we were all flooded with papers and exams, Campus Tree USA – a Bryn Mawr Campus program by Grounds Department, held a tree re-labeling event on campus. Some of the gardening volunteers were able to volunteer at the  event. We learned that the community can use their smart phones  to scan the new QR codes and be linked a webpage with information about each tree on campus.

Ever wonder why pineapples are named pineapples? The name comes from European explorers who thought that the fruit had the combined look of a pine cone with the flesh like an apple.

Volunteer Appreciation Event

On December 7th we celebrate our hard working and dedicated volunteers, as well as our incredible success in the BMC Community Garden this semester. Tasty food like banana bread, pumpkin, and gingerbread cookies, were prepared by Bianca. Lemon Balm plants were free for any takers, and succulents were sold for only $5!

We started off the celebration with a pie eating contest. Our head coordinator, Maiya, took home the bragging rights of first place as she finished seconds before Frankie. By the end of the event, the Garden Committee presented a presentation of the development of the garden over the years and this semester’s success.

Check out our presentation below! (Click on the screen to move to the next slide)

Expansion of the Garden

Early this month the committee and many volunteers were able to make a dream come true – Expanding the garden! At 2 pm with started off with no tomato bed, narrow beds, and large piles of wood chips and compost. By 4 pm, we had reset the four wide beds, adjusted the hose, laid the compost on the beds and the wood chips on the walkways, and last but not least, mixed the diatoms with the compost.
